over the weekend we watched les quatre cents coups (the 400 blows), an assignment for ben’s film class. the 1959 french film directed by françois truffaut, about a boy and his struggles with adolescence and the authority figures around him, sheds light on the cruel treatment of juvenile offenders during that era. in the film, the black and white images of france, cobblestone streets, and smoky tin rooftops are breathtaking.

printemps été 2010

vanessa bruno has fashion coursing through her veins. her mother was a danish super model and her father was the founder of french line emmanuelle khan. her spring collection aspires to fill every girls wardrobe with asymetical tops, trapeze dresses, and lots and lots of lace. off the runway, bruno’s athé line offers a more well-priced take on her mainline collection and is full of savvy spring essentials.

lucky break
la blogotheque has been filming a series of impromptu concerts around paris called "take away shows." phoenix just did a few songs with them by the eiffel tower, trocadero, and along the seine. lucky tourists. earlier this year they also filmed bon iver singing down winding streets and in doorways, and on a balcony overlooking the city's rooftops. the music is lovely and imperfect, but i would watch all of the films on mute if i had to, just to see the intimate images of the city that i miss.

little pictures

the pictorial webster's is a visual dictionary filled with over 1500 of the original engravings found in the 19th century webster's editions. flipping through the pages of neatly arranged archetypes and curiosities remind me of the hours i spent wandering through the collections at the national museum of natural history, in paris. ben gave the book to me for my birthday last week, neatly wrapped in cardboard with a sharpied gift tag.

dressing the part

steven alan always has a classic collegiate style with a twist. fall essentials include signature shirting and extended outerwear with cropped trousers, opaque tights, and ankle boots. the designer recently added a spring 2010 video of his upcoming collection, which follows a couple through an idyllic weekend in the country.

looking the part

clothing designer, dace moore, consistently creates the most beautiful lookbooks for all of her collections. the fall series, shot at the southlands riding club in vancouver, bc, shows fog creeping across the field, frost melting off of tree branches, and a horses steamy breath breaking through the cold air, all embodying the beauty of the season. the collection has a 1930’s equestrian feel with rich colors, structured skirts, high-wasted trousers, and draped silk tops. the video is a sneak peak of the spring 2010 collection and another lookbook to anticipate. it makes me want to skip winter all together and get on a flight back to paris.

typeface

last night i finally watched helvetica, a film that discusses the way type affects our lives while centering around the proliferation of the title font. there seems to be two factions regarding helvetica—those that believe it is perfection, and those that feel it is some sort of global monster. i have to say that i agree with the few individuals interviewed that think there is a time and place for all types. my heart fluttered at the beginning of the film when massimo vignelli said, as he was rejecting the idea of expressive fonts, “you can say i love you in helvetica, you can say it with helvetica extra light if you want to be really fancy, or you can say it with the extra bold if you are really intense and passionate.” now that is romance. he is clearly not a fan of georgia type.

little people in a big world
keith loutit uses a tilt-shift technique to capture ordinary people in ordinary places. changing the depth of field can create such a bizarre affect. it forces you to see things differently and focus on a part of an image you may have otherwise missed. i am mesmerized by his films. the more i watch, the more i wish parts of my life could be in time lapse.
