i’m headed back to bemidji on saturday. my sister and i are both flying in to spend a week at my family’s cabin. whenever we're home, we try to put together a sewing project, mainly because my mom is a genius when it comes to stitching and we like to have her around to show us the ropes and finish our button holes. purl soho always has the most amazing fabric. here are a few swatches that are currently on their web site. i wonder what we’ll make this year.

san francisco native, erica tanov's spring/summer collection consists of a mix of laid back, feminine pieces, carefully created from tissue cotton, irish linen, and petal silk fabrics.

these unusual lamps, created from porcelain and oak, are the most recent addition to designers daphna issacs and laurens manders collection “tafelstukken” meaning “centerpieces” in dutch.
it’s spring, the birds are out, and a pair of robins are building a nest in my backyard. for decades, the quelle-est-belle company in france has been creating beautiful, handcrafted flutes to imitate bird calls developed by françois morel. singly packed or in a beautiful wooden box set, calls range in over 50 birds from the black-billed cuckoo to the tawny owl.
artist lily stockman currently lives and works in joshual tree, california. this summer, she is taking her studio on the road and driving cross-country with her husband, their two dogs, and a restored 13-foot 1978 scamp trailer, documenting the american landscape coast-to-coast through a series of new paintings. she will be posting updates along the way on her studio blog. to me, this sounds like the most amazing way to spend a summer. my parents just bought a scamp... i wonder if they would notice if it disappeared for a few months?
on sunday, some lovely ladies came over and we spent the afternoon making jam. we were all amateurs, so our attempt at making apricot/peach lavender jam and strawberry/lemon marmalade was definitely experimental. i piled the apricot jam on my peanut butter toast this morning—it was delicious—but as far as the marmalade goes… i'm still waiting for it to magically thicken every time i tip the jar. overall, i think 1 out of 2 isn't bad for our first try. after all the jars were sterilized and sealed we hung out in the garden, margarita in hand, eating our tasty creations.

design team hunter bell and jennifer dixon showcase their spring collection for clothing line hunter dixon on the early morning streets and alleyways of new york's soho/nolita area. the brightly colored shop doors and graffitied walls make a perfect backdrop for the collection's feminine prints, lovely silk tops, and tailored skirts and dresses.
artist bryan nash gill presses his fingers along each of the tree's growth rings to imprint the texture from the woodcut on to the surface of the paper. each relief print is a graph of a tree's life, from beginning to end. showing a swell from a rain-soaked spring, suppression from pollution or drought, scars from a fire or an avalanche. when i look at nash's beautiful prints is see times of success or failure, danger and safety, and maybe even periods of happiness and sadness.
