a year in books

sometimes it feels like i spend most of my nights curled up with a laptop rather than a book, but looking back there were a number that i read and loved last year. with so many amazing pieces of literature, how do you choose? what are you reading? i tend to gravitate toward contemporary fiction, so i try to alternate with an unread classic or autobiography.

  1. I loved Just Kids! And The Marriage Plot is sitting on my bedside table waiting to be started--can't wait as I love J. Eugenides.

  2. I loved A Visit From the Goon Squad AND The Marriage Plot.

My favourite this year was Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Schteyngart. I'd really recommend it, especially if you're into contemporary fiction.

  3. I'm currently reading A Visit from the Goon Squad and getting no sleep because of it! I love the way Jennifer Egan writes. I think I'll read Just Kids next. A few others I've enjoyed recently: Zeitoun by Dave Eggers, The Paris Wife by Paula McLain and Bossypants by Tina Fey :)

  4. Would you recommend just kids to a non Patti fan? Not that I don't like her, but haven't spent much time with her music. I'm reading Wildwood by Colin Meloy and would really recommend that.

  5. I love A Visit from the Goon Squad and I liked Never Let Me Go. Have you tried 1Q84? I'm a huge Murakami fan and so far this is one of his best books. Given the selections listed above, I think you would really like it.

  6. I feel exactly the same: way too disconnected from my 'healthy' loves and too attached to the screen. But, like you, there were so many amazing books from last year... White Tiger and The Rules of Civility, at the top of my list!

  7. I just finished "Ready Player One" and "The Leftovers" - both fiction. Fantastic reads! Currently in the weeds with The China Study (non-fiction, health sciences).

The Book of Lost Things is also a wonderful read. Beautifully written and I was so enamored with the main character - excellent plot & development.
