au naturel
stewart + brown is an organic clothing line based out of los angeles, ca. the husband and wife team use sustainable, non-toxic materials and fabrics while practicing their business in an eco-conscious manner. they draw their design inspiration from the images and colors found in their sketch books containing ideas, found objects, and memories, and combine them with texture and color. organic material isn't just hemp anymore, the above cashmere sweater was actually culled by mongolian nomads.

sapping my youth
i would get paid 1 penny for each pine cone i collected from the yard before my mom mowed the lawn. my small, sap sticky hands would move along the grass and dirt searching diligently for each cone and, when she wasn't watching, reach up and pull them off the low branches of the trees before tossing them into the rusty wheel barrel.
coe & waito create quiet objects inspired by natural elements like these hand sculpted porcelain pine cones and acorns.

separation of
church & state is a portland, or, based clothing label. their spring collection is almost as sweet as their online description, "if church & state were a day of the week, it would be sunday, if it were a baked good, it would be a homemade pie, if it were a liquor, it would be bourbon, and if it were a friend, it would be the best one."

macarons
in my opinion, the best macarons in paris. citrus, cherry + pistachio, elder flower, chocolate + praline, and burnt butter caramel from pain de sucre.

a little peace
when i leave the apartment around noon i always notice an older man in the window across the courtyard, standing by the open glass, wearing a white shirt and apron, ironing. i watch him as i walk down the three sets of stairs in our 17th century building, my hand running along the polished wood banister, staring uneasily at the cracks progressing up the side of the wall and the heavy chandelier teetering above me, wondering when it will all give out. the man works in a calming way. long, slow strokes along the material.
when i iron, its always in short, frantic bursts, like i'm trying to work out a stain or scratch an itch.
by some miracle, i've started to adapt to the french contented life. i still get the urge to bust through the crowds of people inching along rue du bac on saturday morning as i'm trying to get to the bakery, or eat my lunch standing over the kitchen sink, but those impulses are rare. in paris, nothing is rushed. life is meant to be lived. that's probably my wide-eyed idealization of the way things are, but i think i'll keep it.

what was the question?
nothing is certain in this collection of pieces by tauba auerbach, which focuses on the complexities of communication. i am fascinated with words. the way they look and the way they sound. font isn't locked to a courier setting and letters can state the obvious or be completely suspicious. we think and say the opposite all the time.

très chic
sandro boutiques are scattered all over paris, carrying the staples that make french women look so effortless. layers of tiered ruffles, slouchy shorts, suede ankle boots, and yes, even 21st century parachute pants - what more could a girl want? here are a few images from their spring/summer 2009 collection.

forget-me-knot
my friend katy would spend a week during the summer at our cabin growing up. we would sleep in a tent in the yard, practice diving off the raft, and ride double on her banana seat bike. in a last-ditch effort to extend her stay we would hide her retainer and headgear. this went on for a few consecutive summers. it seemed logical at the time. everyone benefited. either she would stay to find it or leave and never have to wear it again. the plan never worked.
this gold retainer necklace, by kiel mead, would be perfect for her. i love jewelry that takes the ordinary and turns it into something beautiful and wearable.

wanderlust
these images from the photo series "wanderlust," by japanese-born artist kanako sasaki, remind me of spring. the urge to explore, to break free and run wild. the brown fields left after the snow melts and the first sign of color when dandelions invade your yard. picking up handfuls of flowers and reciting "mama had a baby" in your head as you flick their tops to the ground. if my sister was standing next to me i would trace a yellow streak of baby pee down her arm. maybe i'll just do it to myself.
