theatricalized nature

irish artist and photographer gerard byrne recreates the setting in samuel beckett’s play “waiting for godot,” in his series “a country road. a tree. evening.” in each roadside scene, byrne uses on-site color lighting to tint the landscape and construct a dramatic stage.

subtle spring

it has been in the 50s in michigan this week—an absolute heat wave. the snow has been replaced by slowly diminishing piles of brown slush and the other day i passed a group of college students in shorts and t-shirts! i love the neutral colors and pale prints coming out for spring. most of these beautiful pieces might exceed my budget, but i still can’t help but wish they were hanging in my closet: (1) asos, matte finish keyhole sunglasses, $25; (2) 3.1 phillip lim, pocket top, $275; (3) melie bianco, dakota bag, $76; (4) hope, light grey woven scarf, $150; (5) apc, sport shots, $135; (6) naima swing jacket, $250; (7) sally scott, tunic, $300; (8) salt water sandals, navy, $89; (9) tibi, charlie skirt, $238

remembering light and space

despite appearances, these are not images of light and shadows cast on a wall from a nearby window. artist mary temple applies latex paint, varnish, and wood stain on an otherwise blank façade to create her “light installations.” producing an illusion—a chance for light to seek light.

b + b elsewhere

today, one of my favorite bloggers, diana of miss moss, invited me to participate in her "things i like right now" series. i had so much fun thinking about what i was into from books and music to spring essentials and everyday wears. thank you so much diana!

a lifetime of love

my grandma and grandpa, dorothy and donald, were married on a warm june afternoon in 1949 in a small church in st. paul, minnesota. the day before the wedding, a doctor had discovered that my grandpa had strep throat and prescribed him antibiotics and bed rest. the morning of the wedding, his temperature was well over 100°F. regardless, nothing would stop him from marrying my grandma. she wore a beautiful, new, white suit with pearl and gold buttons and an orchid corsage, a borrowed gold necklace, and a traditional blue garter. after driving off in their decorated car, my grandpa went back to bed. i love this photo of them. my grandpa could not take his eyes off her, and who could blame him.

seeing is believing

honestly, i feel like i could be one of warby parker’s biggest advocates—my husband has a pair, my sister has a pair, yet, somehow i don’t have a pair. hopefully, that is all about to change. yesterday they launched their new 2011 collection, with 14 new frames and 8 new colors. this morning, i made an appointment with an optometrist to get an updated prescription. now, i just have to decide which 5 i want delivered for a home try-on. any favorites?

mysteriously familiar

resort collections make me forget about spring and skip straight to lusting after long summer days, bright prints, and sleeveless tanks. right now, i would trade a room full of floating feathers, like those featured in the tucker resort/winter 2010 video, with the inches of fresh snow on the ground outside.

then + there

i was looking through alec soth’s collection “paris/minnesota,” admiring the contrast and comparison between the stark, white stage of a chanel fashion show at the grand palais and the empty, snow-covered parking lot of a jcpenny. and then i saw them. four girls, each with a distict style. they were students at my old high school. i didn’t know them. i graduated years ago. but i recognized the jacket and it’s big, blue letter b. it was a strange mix of my childhood and adulthood coming together in a small grouping of photos.

i’ve never been to a paris fashion show or to the walker eelpout festival, but looking through these images made me realize that there are a lot of things i want and need to do. and hopefully, so do those four girls.

a study

christina mazzalupo's collection “types of kinds,” explores the relationship between creative and psychological processes, asking questions related to cause and effect, destiny versus luck, personal perception versus collective comprehension, monomyths, mutations, and fantasies through each diagram and drawing series.

one big collection

now that ben and i have a house of our own, and are not moving from one small studio to the next, our parents have been emptying out their basements and bringing us boxes and bins of old clothes, books, and childhood memorabilia. i’m feeling a little overwhelmed by all of the stuff (something they have endured all these years). i’m not sure what to do with it all, and i know a few trips to goodwill are in order, but there are certain things i can’t quite part with, and have no idea where to put. in the mix, i just discovered my old stamp collection. isn't it a beauty? it’s distracting me from the task at hand—i need to put down the book and get back to the bins for my own piece of independence.

it has been one busy week, which is wonderful, but i couldn’t be happier that today is friday. i can’t wait to see some friends tonight and sleep in tomorrow. i hope you have a lovely weekend!

feminine workwear

designer billy reid creates the aesthetic of his all-american clothing line from his classic southern roots, hailing from florence, alabama, and combines them with a little bit of the contemporary city. i love the menswear inspired look of the spring 2011 collection, with oversized shirt-dresses to tailored suits with suspenders.

made in italy

j. crew’s design team visited their shoe manufacturers in castelfranco di sotto, italy, to watch their creations come to life. the footage was recently posted on their web site, showing the start to finish on how their fabulous footwear is made. two of my favorite pairs for spring are from their quorra line—these beautiful cutout leather oxfords and ballet flats.

migration

french photographer, céline clanet, captured these images around máze, a small sámi village in the norwegian lapland above the arctic circle, surrounded by some of the most beautiful tundra in the region. during her first trip to máze, clanet stayed over the course of three spring months, when the days were longer and the temperatures were milder, to immerse herself in the culture of one of the only arctic indigenous people left in continental europe, and to photograph the beautiful, unique, and wild territory that they call home.
